BUILDING OUR STORY

2020 DEER RIDGE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CLUB

Zhivago Rhodes, founder, and a group of men in the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution were approved to start an African American Cultural Club.  At that point, UMOJA NI NGUVU was born.  Forty-Four men, an executive board officers developed three events, by-laws, and membership packets for a 750-member institution.   Three events were birthed from this BIG IDEA in a SMALL SPACE.  The Juneteenth event, The KWANZAA, and the One FUNDRAISER BANQUET annually.

2023

UMOJI, The Global Community Hub was born as an off shoot of the UMOJA NI NGUVU. It is now a non-profit corporation.

NOW... we serve as a community hub virtually and within incarceration's walls. Soon, we would like to provide transitional programs, housing, and on-campus living in the near future. Until then, we are serving one Adult in Custody and one "Adult in Custody" at Release at a time.
