BUILDING OUR STORY

2020 DEER RIDGE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CLUB

Zhivago Rhodes, founder, and a group of men in the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution were approved to start an African American Cultural Club.  At that point, UMOJA NI NGUVU was born.  Forty-Four men, an executive board officers developed three events, by-laws, and membership packets for a 750-member institution.   Three events were birthed from this BIG IDEA in a SMALL SPACE.  The Juneteenth event, The KWANZAA, and the One FUNDRAISER BANQUET annually.

2023

UMOJI, The Global Community Hub was born as an off shoot of the UMOJA NI NGUVU. It is now a non-profit corporation.

NOW... we serve as a community hub virtually and within incarceration's walls. Soon, we would like to provide transitional programs, housing, and on-campus living in the near future. Until then, we are serving one Adult in Custody and one "Adult in Custody" at Release at a time.

Since 2020, UMOJI, THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY HUB has played a significant role in the Oregon community. Our community is a place of gathering where members can come together to socialize and engage in healthy activities together. At UMOJI, THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY HUB, our mission is to enhance the community’s quality of life by providing members with a wide range of recreational, and social activities that are both unifying and empowering.

We have been impacting the lives of our community members through our wide range of enriching programs and events. What started off as a big idea in a small space, has grown to be the hub for multiculturalism recreational empowerment, connection for resources, and community. We have a holistic approach to providing resources in the continuum/spectrum of the imprisonment/prison, jail, penitentiary, and corrections system (before, during, after, and breaking the cycles as well.
